Do Seniors Get a Discount on Transfer Duty When Building a New Home?

Fremantle Latest News 26th April, 2017 No Comments

State property taxes seriously impact the affordability of moving house. Whether that be to buy your first home, trade up into a larger home to meet a growing family or right size in your later years to accommodation that’s more suitable to your needs.

During the 2017 State Election, REIWA campaigned heavily for the need to, at the very least, offer an exemption to the cost of transfer duty (formerly stamp duty) for seniors over 60 when wanting to ‘right size’ into a more suitable property.

The then Liberal Government agreed with the direction of REIWA’s policy and announced a $15,000 concession for stamp duty for seniors over 65 purchasing a home under the value of $750,000. However, this election commitment will not proceed as the Liberal Party was not re-elected.

So, REIWA has already started the conversation with the new McGowan Government and will continue to advocate for transfer duty relief for our seniors.
